RACHEL CORNISH

I use the moving image to explore the conscious experience of ‘being’ in the time frame referred to as ‘now’. By manipulating spatial aspects and the linearity of filmed experience, my work, frequently meditative in nature, invites the viewer to question the essence of being present. ‘When do I experience something happening?’ bears a unique relationship to memory and mental reconstruction.

Using lens-based and moving-image media, I consider how we perceive, interpret and construct our sense of being-in-the-world through visual phenomena. Considering ‘the measure for architecture, the structure of dwelling’, and how this informs our thinking-language, I am interested in the relationship between the physical dwelling place and mental dwelling space. I use image as poetic visual metaphor to explore the human condition of ‘being’ as a dialogue between material and spiritual encounter, and to dissolve the palpable boundary between these interior and exterior worlds of inhabitation.
